Susie 1992-2011
When we got Susie, we already had two cats (Calvin and Hobbes) but I couldn’t resist the spunk of this adorable girl. The name ‘Susie’ came from the Calvin & Hobbes comic strip, and she did her best to live up to the reputation. She could be a spitfire. Her first week home, as a tiny sprite of a kitten, she boldly hopped onto the kitchen table, grabbed a leg of chicken off one of our dinner plates, and then proceeded to fight for ownership of the chicken. After that she grudgingly acknowledged her place in the family, as long as it didn’t involve getting into a car, and would even consent to sitting on a warm lap in her later years.
Though mostly an inside cat, she loved sunning herself in the herb garden. In this 2009 picture you can see the small catnip plant that I finally got to survive a couple years ago, despite being chewed on and smushed under overweight cats. Yesterday, I carried Susie outside and she spent several hours in the sun next to that same catnip plant, but today it was time to say goodbye. I’m very thankful that her passing could be so peaceful. Thank you.
